Twelve invited scholars will engage with current issues around sport, morality, and human rights to assess whether stakeholders in sport can and should remain neutral in political questions. A session in legal issues is organized in collaboration with the annual conference of the International Sports Law Journal. The second day will focus on the role of sport science as a “neutral” academic field, since it appears to become increasingly dependent on sport organizations for funding, access to documentation, and publisher of research results.

On this occasion, we are delighted to welcome the first two published authors in our series. Dr. Luiz Burlamaqui (Universidade de São Paulo) will present on his book, The Making of Global FIFA. Cold War Politics and the Rise of João Havelange to the FIFA Presidency, 1950–1974, and Dr. Rahul Kumar (Faculdade de Economia da Universidade de Coimbra) will present on his soon-to-be-released book, Football and Fascism. The Politics of Popular Culture in Portugal.

In recent years, the increasing fragmentation of the international system casts further complexity and uncertainty on international sport, calling for renewed scholarly attention and inquiry. Against this backdrop, we invite scholars of sport as a social phenomenon and institution – historians, sociologists, political scientists, International Relations and Media and Communications scholars – to submit proposals addressing the multifaceted nexus between sport and international politics.

The 1/2022 volume of the biannual International Studies: Interdisciplinary Political and Cultural Journal will address the complex relationship between politics and sports in international and national contexts. We invite papers presenting multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research from within political science, international relations, public affairs, communication, social and political geography, cultural studies and mass media studies.

In order to encourage the contribution of new generations of scholars to the scientific debate, The International Spectator currently welcomes the submission of proposals for THEMATIC SPECIAL CORES of 4-6 articles on the topic of “Sport and International Relations” by teams of young scholars (under 35 years of age), to be considered for publication in the journal. Proposals shall focus on any aspect of the multifaceted relationship between Sport and International Relations.
