The rise of kung fu and other Asian style martial arts to a mainstream American sport is largely due to Bruce Lee. The early history of Lee is chronicled by Charles Russo in Striking Distance: Bruce Lee and the Dawn of Martial Arts in America (University of Nebraska Press). Our reviewer is Brian Burmeister, and though lamenting Russo’s exclusion of Lee’s career i film he is much impressed by this slice of martial arts history.
