The latest episode of The WiSEAN Podcast: Women’s Sport & Exercise Research is now available, with Dr Trish Jackman joining Britta Sorensen for a wide-ranging conversation about her research, career and interests across sport and exercise psychology.
Dr Trish Jackman is Associate Professor in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Lincoln and Chair of the Psychology Division of the Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES). She is also a registered Sport and Exercise Psychologist, working with athletes, coaches, parents and support staff across a range of sports.
In this episode, Trish reflects on a career that began, almost by chance, with an undergraduate essay about flow. She discusses how her thinking about flow has developed over two decades, moving beyond the idea of a single, purely cognitive state of optimal performance towards a more embodied and individual understanding of the experience.
The conversation also explores her work on healthy ageing and physical activity, loneliness in sport, and the mental health of doctoral researchers, before turning to her research on women and girls in sport in Ireland.
As a member of the Míde Research consortium, Trish led a scoping review examining research about women in sport across the island of Ireland. She discusses what the existing evidence tells us, the gaps that remain, and the challenge of ensuring that research reaches coaches, practitioners and communities rather than remaining solely within academic publications.
And, in a fittingly personal ending, Trish talks about taking up running after retiring from camogie — and why, having decided she was never going to be fast, she started with an ultramarathon!
