Well-written, comprehensible, and comprehensive study of football’s early history

The checkered history of early football, with its great variety of codes for the game, is thoroughly investigated in Tony Collins’ How Football Began: A Global History of How the World's Football Codes Were Born (Routledge). We know how it went, with Association Football rules ending up the winner, but, according to our reviewer Bente Skogvang, how and why that happened is what Collins’ excellent study is all about. And there is by no means a clearcut answer.

Introductory reader on sport and politics that has much to recommend it

Capitalism and Sport: Politics, Protest, People and Play by Michael Lavalette (ed.) examines the relationship between capitalism and sport by exploring the tensions that exist within sport from two distinct perspectives: the politics of sport and the politics in sport.
