The International Journal of the History of Sport, Volume 37, 2020, Issue 3–4 | Horse Racing in Global-Historical Perspective
The International Journal of the History of Sport is the world’s leading sport history academic periodical with fully-refereed global coverage of the subject. The Forum Editor’s pick from the current issue: HORSE RACES AND CHARIOT RACES IN ANCIENT GREECE: STRUGGLING FOR ETERNAL GLORY by Christian Mann & Sebastian Scharff.
Unique study of the historical role of the horse in non-European societies
Susanna Hedenborg is impressed by Peter Mitchell’s study of the introduction of the horse into various societies outside Europe from 1492 onwards. Horse Nations: The Worldwide Impact of the Horse on Indigenous Societies Post-1492 (Oxford University Press) does not, however, cover sports; instead it lays the historical and empirical foundations for studies of competitive equestrianism.
