Graham Curry’s From the Privileged to the Professionals: The Early Years of the FA Cup (Routledge) is concerned with the Football Association Challenge Cup, examining events from its inception in 1871–2 to the beginning of the Football League in 1888–9. In his review for idrottsforum.org, Mats Greiff is impressed by the author’s thorough study of historical sources and the detailed presentation of his results, but he would have liked a similarly thorough analysis of the dialectic between the small and the big history.

Ronny Blaschke’s Power Players: Football in Propaganda, War and Revolution (Pitch Publishing) exposes the political abuse of football. Dictators present themselves in stadiums as representatives of the people. But 'ultras' defy them and fight in revolutions on the front line. Historian Mats Greiff is in two minds about the book – with its geographical breadth and wealth of data it's immensely instructive, but Blaschke fails to tie up the loose ends with an overarching analysis of it all.

Kvinnor och män i Lönsboda Pistolskytteklubb 1963–2020: Ett lokalt perspektiv på skytterörelsen i Sverige av Mats Greiff och Anders Lindh (Arx Förlag) belyser det vardagliga idrottslivet i byn Lönsboda i nordöstra Skåne under en period på närmare 60 år, utifrån bland annat genus- och generationsaspekter. I Mike Huggins nya bok Horse Racing and British Society in the Long Eighteenth Century (Boydell Press) letar författaren sig ned till den moderna hästsportens rötter och sätter in den i en kulturell, social, politisk och ekonomisk kontext. Mats Greiff, historiker med stort intresse för hästsport och socialhistoria läser Huggins bok med historiografisk blick, och hittar mycket att glädjas åt.

Med sin bok The Global Horseracing Industry: Social, Economic, Environmental and Ethical Perspectives (Routledge) ville författarna Phil McManus, Glenn Albrecht och Raewyn Graham ta ett nytt grepp på hästkapplöpningssporten. Den 28 maj 2015 disputerade Nils-Olof Zethrin vid Örebro universitet på den idrottshistoriska avhandlingen Mellan masskonsumtion och folkrörelse: Idrottens kommersialisering under mellankrigstiden. Fakultetsopponent var Mats Greiff, och hans opposition publiceras här i recensionens form.
