The book Chinese Women Striving for Status: Sport as Empowerment by Dong Jinxia and J.A. Mangan (Peter Lang) analyses for the first time, in informed and substantial detail, the extraordinary, successful and impressive efforts of Chinese sportswomen in their collective striving for, and achieving of, national and international recognition, status and supremacy. Daniel Alsarve is impressed: “The authors have carried out a thorough and impressive empirical investigation and have produced a standard reference work that scholars and students will need to engage with for a long time to come.”

The collected volume Softpower, Soccer, Supremacy: The Chinese Dream by J.A. Mangan, Peter Horton & Christian Tagsold (Peter Lang) looks at Xi Jinping’s “Soccer Revolution”, the most extensive politicization and geo-politicization of the Global Game. Oliver Rick, well acquainted with sports in China, considers the book an important collection that provides keen insights into the role of football in China’s politics in the Southeast. He does have reservations though, regarding the inclusion of an Australian perspective.

Japanese Imperialism: Politics and Sport in East Asia: Rejection, Resentment, Revanchism examines the legacies of Japanese imperialism in light of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The anthology is edited by J.A. Mangan, Peter Horton, Tianwei Ren and Gwang Ok and published by Palgrave. Professor Kristian Gerner sees this as a fine example of history writing that takes moral issues seriously.

Thierry Terret och J.A. Mangan står som redaktörer bakom antologin Sport, Militarism and the Great War: Martial Manliness and Armageddon och medverkar själva med mer än hälften av bidragen. Peter Englunds Stridens skönhet och sorg är en bättre skildring av första världskriget, konstaterar Matti Goksøyr, men den handlar ju inte om sport.

Tobias Stark har läst tre Routledge-antologier i serien Sport in the Global Society, som från olika infallsvinklar undersöker amerikansk idrott. Det handlar om tre utmärkta forskningsprodukter rörande ett viktigt, men alltför förbisett akademiskt kunskapsområde, menar vår recensent.
