The seminar wants to bring together scholars from all kinds of disciplines as well as practitioners that share the interest in the media-based communication of sport. Consequently, submissions may be rooted also in sports politics, sports economy, sports management, sports technology, sports sociology, and sports practice itself. In the seminar, we strive to include a diversity of theoretical and methodical approaches to sports communication and give voice to researchers from all parts of Europe.

We seek research on some key themes: black sports journalists; coverage of black athletes and others involved in professional and non-professional sports (managers, coaches, owners); and coverage of race and racial tensions in sports. We are particularly interested in research that addresses intersections with race/ethnicity, gender, and sexuality or that identifies potential solutions to problems. We define “media” broadly.

Play the Game 2019 invites athletes, sports officials, governments, academics, journalists, industry official and all other stakeholders in sport to share your knowledge, experience and opinions in Colorado Springs, from 13-16 October – at the 11th edition of a conference that has a history of more than 20 years as a cutting edge forum for independent and fact-based sports debate.

The rapidly evolving sport media industry and the changing face of mediated sport production continues to raise original critical questions in new emerging contexts. This one-day preconference pays attention to issues of sport, representation, power and social justice. Crossing disciplinary boundaries – the theme of the 2019 ICA conference – is encouraged in proposed papers.

This event seeks to take stock of current developments in the field of sport and media and critically assess new theoretical and methodological approaches. Of particular interest will be current debates around mediatization in understanding contemporary trends in the domain of sport. We welcome papers from post-graduate as well as established researchers.

Play the Game is a unique forum for networking and professional exchange between 3-400 researchers, journalists, whistle-blowers, sports officials and people from the sports industry. We invite you, too, to submit an abstract/storyline and give your contribution to a more informed sports debate on a number of vital issues for modern sport.
