Sport for development | PhD Studentship available at The Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. Apply before May 25, 2018

The Department of Social and Cultural Studies has a vacant PhD candidate position in the field of Sport for development. It is planned for a PhD degree based on articles published in relevant and acknowledged journals. The applicant must be able to speak and write English. Knowledge of a Scandinavian language is appreciated.

Besides writing the thesis, the PhD candidate will be involved in the planning, organizing and lecturing at bachelor level at NSSS, especially in relation to the one year study Idrett, kultur og utviklingssamarbeid (Sport, culture and developmental cooperation).

Competence requirements and selection process

The applicant must be qualified for a PhD candidate position at NSSS. In order to be admitted to the doctoral program at NSSS, the applicant should have earned a two-year master’s degree (120 credits) in sport science or a cand.scient. degree in sport science, or have equivalent educational qualifications at this level in the area of sport science. It may also be possible to  document knowledge and understanding of sport science at a comparable level in other ways. There is minimum requirement of grade B for the master’s degree. The position is especially relevant for candidates with a master’s degree in sport science with a specialization in social sciences. Knowledge of developmental studies will be considered an advantage.

The PhD candidate will collaborate with a number of persons and institutions and communicative skills and collaborative experience are therefore essential. Finally, personal skills and experience will be considered.

The applicant will have to propose a research project plan (10 pages, including time line and budget). The following will be evaluated:

  • Quality and relevance of previous scientific work in the relevant area of research
  • Quality and relevance of Master thesis and/or publications
  • Quality of the project plan
  • Quality and relevance of methodological and theoretical knowledge
  • Personal suitability

Working conditions

Salary is offered according to the Norwegian State pay scale, employment code 1017, PhD research fellow. The appointment will be made according to terms applying to civil servants. The NSSS is a member of the Norwegian State Pension Fund.

The PhD research fellowship period is 4 years. Supervision and teaching duties can be assigned within the limit of 25 % of the full position.
