International Platform on Sport & Development e-Newsletter / Issue No. 85

women-in-sport-and-developmentDear Readers,

Welcome to Issue 85 of the sportanddev e-Newsletter!

Following International Women’s Day, this edition focuses on the role sport can play in enabling equal opportunities and promoting gender issues. Addressing these issues demands “a deep cultural shift in which past stereotypes and prejudices must be broken down,” according to Steffi Biester, Director of KICKFAIR. Taking a critical look at Zambian women’s football, Lombe Mwambwa, general secretary of NOWSPAR, also asserts, “this is an issue of cultural transformation and not just minor changes.”

Examples of community level change in Kenya through sport are shared by Coaches Across Continents, and by UK Sport through their funded programmes for women in low and middle income countries. Creative reporting about these issues and sport’s role in addressing them is vital, so if you’re a journalist don’t miss out on a perfect opportunity from The European Journalism Centre.

Enjoy your reading,
