When I was young, cross-country skiers used to ski, and only after having retired, they might have picked up the pen and published an edifying memoir, guided of course by the invisible hand of a ghostwriter.<\/p>\n

These days skiers don\u2019t ski as often as before. They have time for all sorts of distractions, including literary hobbies. Last month, for example, an impressive array of athletes put their names on an open letter addressed to the International Ski Federation (FIS) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).<\/p>\n

\u2018We believe a soft-handed approach to anti-doping is allowing cheating to persist in our sport,\u2019 they solemnly declared. \u2018We request stronger leadership by both the FIS and the IOC.\u2019<\/p>\n

Olympic medalists and lesser athletes signed the letter that called for a chat with Gian-Franco Kasper, president of the FIS and IOC member. An Italian gentiluomo, Kasper soon indicated that he might indeed spare a moment to the skiers at the February world championships in Lahti.
\n<\/a>Of course, today\u2019s athletes are too young to remember that the best and the brightest of the previous generation composed a similarly sanctimonious letter twenty years ago. In December 1996, Bj\u00f8rn D\u00e6hlie (Norway), Jelena V\u00e4lbe (Russia), Jari Isomets\u00e4 (Finland) and Silvio Fauner (Italy), among others, expressed their love for \u2018clean sport\u2019 and \u2018fair play\u2019. They truly yearned for improved test methods, especially for EPO!<\/p>\n

The human growth hormone (HGH) couldn\u2019t be detected either in the 1990s. Twenty years on, testing for EPO and HGH is still far from reliable, as any second-rate skier can confirm. No wonder first-rate skiers literally<\/a> sing the praises of \u2018clean\u2019 sport.<\/p>\n

Vestigia terrent, however, as the Latinists put it. Some of the 1996 letter-writing skiers have subsequently tested positive or been otherwise connected with illicit performance enhancement. I, for one, pray that the hypocrisy of this season\u2019s skiers won\u2019t be exposed until much later so that no one can derive Schadenfreude from their angelic letter.<\/p>\n

That said, I fear many more open letters will be published in the not-too-distant future, letters in which skiers lament their \u2018unclean\u2019 sport and denounce anonymous \u2018cheaters\u2019 among themselves. Don\u2019t hold your breath, though; the next letter won\u2019t come out until December 2036. You see, 1996\u20132016\u20132036!<\/p>\n

In the meantime, the skiing youth should perhaps listen to their president for a change. \u2018We need to stop pretending sport is clean,\u2019 Gian-Franco Kasper told The New York Times some months ago. \u2018It\u2019s a noble principle, but in practice? It\u2019s entertainment. It\u2019s drama.\u2019<\/p>\n

The skiing supremo has spoken. If only the main attractions of the cross-country drama would focus on entertaining their audience instead of engaging in literary sideshows!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
