Why not start your visit\u00a0at the congress with a guided tour in historical Malm\u00f6? At 7 am on Thursday morning we walk together and discover Malm\u00f6\u2019s past. Malm\u00f6’s history goes hundreds of years back in time and it was, for a long time, the largest industrial city in Sweden. Today Malm\u00f6 is one of the fastest growing cities in the country,\u00a0with a population of 315.000 people.<\/p>\n

\"Malm\u00f6hus

Malm\u00f6hus Castle<\/p><\/div>\n

Malm\u00f6 is an old city with both Swedish and Danish history. Malm\u00f6hus Castle is the oldest preserved Renaissance castle in Northern Europe. The castle was completed\u00a0around 1500, and has been reconstructed a few times after that. When Denmark reined over Sk\u00e5ne, the Danish kings stayed at the castle during their visits in Malm\u00f6. In 1658 Sk\u00e5ne became Swedish and\u00a0its\u00a0fortifications were strengthened. However, in the 1700s the fortress lost its strategic importance, and it was used as a prison from 1828 to 1909. Since a restoration and reconstruction 1937, the new Malm\u00f6 Museum was opened, using some parts of Malm\u00f6hus Castle. Today Malm\u00f6 Museum contains exhibitions and museums, an aquarium, a technical and maritime museum and caf\u00e9s, and some of the exhibitions are permanent and some open for a limited time only.<\/p>\n

Karl X Gustav<\/p><\/div>\n

In the historical center of the city\u00a0you will find Malm\u00f6’s oldest church,\u00a0<\/span>Sankt Petri Church, which was inaugurated in the early 13th century ,and just two minutes away you\u2019ll find The City Hall, at the Grand\u00a0Square. At the center on the Square, opposite The City Hall, stands the statue of King Karl X Gustav who took the city from Danish command in 1658.<\/p>\n

Malm\u00f6 Stadion<\/p><\/div>\n

An interesting, sports-related curiosity is that Sweden was the host to\u00a01958 FIFA World Cup \u2013 or at least to some matches at the group stage. Malm\u00f6 Stadion was built with the intent to use it\u00a0during the championship, and the record attendance, 30.953, was set in the very first match played at the World Cup, between Argentina (1) and (3) West Germany. The venue was also one of the arenas that were used for the 1992 UEFA European Football Championship, hosted in Sweden. Today the arena is a used as a multi-purpose stadium.<\/p>\n
