Invited session on “Energy metabolism and Sports nutrition exchange: advances in the application of science in the sporting environment” Sponsored by the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI)

Every athlete wants to be the best, to get the most out of every training session and ultimately to win that gold medal or score that winning goal. Now, more than ever, due to the fact that seconds can determine 1st and 2nd place, coaches and athletes want to learn more/ know more in order to achieve those marginal gains.

Every day scientists are conducting studies to gain insight on energy metabolism from both a mechanistic and whole body stand point. This session brings together three of the worlds leading top scientists, with over 40 years of experience in energy metabolism. The speakers will provide an overview of the latest research into the regulation of fat and carbohydrate metabolism and, more importantly, how we can translate this knowledge in to applied sporting situations.

Bente Klens

Bente Klens

The first speaker is Prof. Bente Kiens from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Prof. Kiens will present on the regulation of fat metabolism during and post exercise and discuss what we currently know and what is still under debate. Dr. Kiens will also give a practical perspective on this topic and answer the question “is there is an optimal strategy for reducing body weight without health implications or without reducing performance?”

Erik Richter

Erik Richter

The second speaker is Prof. Erik Richter from the University of Copenhagen, Demark. The title of Prof. Richter’s talk is “Novel Regulatory Mechanisms in the Regulation of Glucose and Potential Innovation Nutrition Strategies for Athletes”. He will present work focusing on muscle contraction induced glucose uptake and the importance of this during exercise and in the post-exercise period.

Lawrence Spriet

The final talk of this session is by Dr. Lawrence Spriet, University of Guelph, Canada. Dr. Spriet will conclude the session by translating the mechanistic data, discussed by the previous speakers, and how that can be applied to the elite sporting environment.
