Call for Papers | “Apartheid Sport: Global and Historical Perspectives”| Special Issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport. Call ends June 18, 2018

Seventy years have passed since the election of the National Party government in South Africa 1948 and subsequent introduction of apartheid legislation. Next year, twenty years will have passed since Douglas Booth’s The Race Game: Sport and Politics in South Africa was awarded the 1999 North American Society for Sport History book award, a capstone of what has become a solid academic foundation of South African sports history. The coming together of these moments in South African history and historiography animates this call for papers for a Special Issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport to be published in December 2018. Situated within the broader topic of “apartheid sport,” the issue’s focus falls on the global nature of anti-apartheid sport movements in solidarity with southern Africa. As editors of this special issue, we encourage new ways to understand South Africa’s global history and welcome the submission of papers on apartheid sport from a range of historical, anthropological, methodological and/or thematic perspectives. Particularly welcome would be papers on one of the following sub-topics:

1. Transnational connections in sport that shaped opposition to white supremacy in South Africa
2. Forms of anti-apartheid sport activism across diverse geographical contexts
3. Gendered analysis of apartheid sport and global activist networks
4. Race, racism, and sport in South African society prior to the introduction of apartheid in 1948
5. Legacies of apartheid sport – what has changed and how did apartheid pave the way for what came next in sport?
6. Ethnographic approaches to apartheid sport legacies
7. Methodological aspects related to the study of apartheid sport

We invite you to submit abstracts to all Guest Editors (contact details below) before 18 June 2018. Full papers must then be submitted before 1 September 2018. All submissions will undergo double-blind peer-review, and must be revised according to feedback from the reviewers and, where necessary, the comments from Guest Editors, Dr. Michelle M.
