Moving Children into Physical Activity

Jan Toftegaard Nielsen

Throughout most Western countries, growing public health concerns are raised as children and youth are becoming less physically active and more obese. One of the key strategies for tackling the issue of childhood obesity is to increase physical activity. Within the Danish BUB-project, one of the aims is to increase physical activity among 6–10 years old children. One of the most important findings of this evaluation study is that more than 90 percent of the children in the study are physically active on a regular basis and that they would like to do more. Besides presenting the most important findings about children’s physical activity, this article also discusses the pros and cons of the modern day ‘project culture’ in terms of facilitating physical activity for the remaining 10 percent of children.
