The Department for Food and Nutrition, and Sport Science (IKI) teaches and researches on diet, physical activity and sport by studying how the interaction between living conditions and lifestyles affect a person’s health, performance and development prospects, and how these issues can be addressed. IKI is also the host department for the Centre for Health and Performance Development (CHP) at the University of Gothenburg. The centre aims to strengthen knowledge about physical activity, sport and diet, and where health and performance development are the focus.

The department was established in 2010, however the subjects and their predecessors have a much longer history at the University of Gothenburg. In 2006, we moved to newly renovated, central premises by Grönsakstorget, and in 2011 the School of Sport Science on Skånegatan was inaugurated.  We are now 70 members of staff and around 700 students.

We offer programmes at all levels: first, second and third-cycle, in addition to freestanding courses. Our first-cycle programmes are interdisciplinary and include health promotion, food service, sports coaching and teacher education in home and consumer studies and physical education and health. We offer second-cycle courses that can lead to a Master’s degree.

Research at IKI is characterised by a clear link to teaching, interdisciplinary collaborations and close contact with the community. Research is organised into five different themes: 1) health promotion; 2) sustainable food consumption; 3) meal times, eating habits and leadership; 4) sports coaching and physical education; 5) health and performance research. A visionary perspective to lead, develop and guarantee quality

As head of department at IKI, you will be responsible for the comprehensive leadership, development and quality of education and research in several multidisciplinary and highly specialised fields. Your visionary perspective will drive the department and develop its potential – both within education and collaboration, and the different research areas at the department.

The head of department’s tasks also involve comprehensive organisational responsibility at the department, and making decisions on matters concerning staff, finances, infrastructure and study administration. You will work to ensure that the departmental staff have the relevant skills, and establish and develop a positive work and study environment. The task also includes responsibility for activities, administration, finance, and staff plus the work environment and safety for the entire department.

The head of department will also oversee the department’s development, specialisations and data, with help from the IKI departmental board. The board is a representative body comprising teachers, technical and administrative staff and students.

Departmental management consists of a head of department, deputy head of department, an assistant head of department for research, and a director of administration.

You will be part of the Heads of Department Council at the Faculty of Education, under leadership from the Dean. In addition to your departmental responsibilities, you are expected to actively participate in the vision, strategy and organisational work aimed to strengthen collaboration throughout the faculty.

To succeed as head of department

In order to succeed as head of department, you need to possess good academic skills and leadership and organisational experience of activities within academia, research institutes, the public sector and/or industry/commerce. You hold a degree of doctor and have experience of research and teaching – ideally within the department’s field of activities.

It is of merit if you have unique skills and a role within an international research programme, expert body, or if you have been part of any academic board for state assignments, or have been enlisted as an expert.

As a leader, you are a visionary; you are strategic, a driving force and result-oriented. You are able to listen, be enthusiastic and communicate. You can lead and delegate work in a way that benefits the organisation as a whole by being able to create good work conditions for others.

You are outgoing and react in a way that inspires confidence – valuable characteristics for creating and building good connections in academia, the public sector, industry, the sports movement and other networks. An expansive interest in society and the community will further contribute to the head of department we look forward to welcoming as a colleague.

A comprehensive assessment will take place when choosing the candidate to determine who has the best characteristics to lead and develop activities at the department. The assessment will be based on work tasks and the qualities stated above, experiences and personal suitability.

You are expected to have good knowledge of Swedish and/or English, both written and spoken. As the majority of activities are conducted in Swedish, you are expected to develop knowledge of the language during the first two years of your appointment.

The Appointment

The appointment is a managerial position at the university and is combined with the role of head of department  Comprising 70 % of the position.
The appointment as head of department lasts 6 years, with a review after 3 years. It is a permanent position at the Department for Food and Nutrition, and Sport Science and will begin on 1 July 2018 or upon agreement.

The selection process

The recruitment process involves interviews and tests, and is combined with an advisory selection by the department. The faculty dean will make the final decision for appointing the head of department.
